Please join us at our Brick by Brick benefit to raise funds to build a girls’ dormitory at Magulilwa Area Secondary School. The new dormitory will provide an opportunity for more girls to continue their education and bring hope to their community.

The evening will include heavy appetizers, cocktails, dessert, a short program, and live and silent auctions.

It would be our pleasure to have you partner with us in our goal to increase educational opportunities in rural Tanzania.

Change it Forward Tanzania and Magulilwa Area Secondary School would like to invite you, thank you and tell you about the amazing things that have happened in the village of Magulilwa, Tanzania.

When: November 18th, 2010

Where:Burger Moes, St. Paul MN

What:
6:00pm – Complimentary food, silent auction, and a Tanzanian Duka (store)

7:15pm – Progress Presentation of Magulilwa. Now the village has running water and electricity. Awesome!

7:45 – Drawing for a gift card to Burger Moe’s – These are good burgers.

8:00pm – We love you, but it’s time to leave.

We have been blessed with two very enthusiastic volunteers who are spending one year in Tanzania teaching English to an array of students and villagers. They have seen first hand the recent changes to the campus with the addition of water and electricity Here is an excerpt from Emily’s blog describing one of her experiences:

Jogging with Village Boys

18 08 2010

I run every other day on the school ground, the football pitch. I go before everyone else comes down to play sport, listen to my ipod, and generally try to have time just to myself. I try to run at least 10 laps around and then walk to cool down. Yesterday I was on maybe lap 3 when a little village boy, maybe 8 years old, just stood there and watched me run. At first I was annoyed because I get tired of being stared at. Then another boy came and the two sat together and watched me run. Half way through lap 4 I noticed one of the boys was running back and forth in the goal box.

As I jogged by, I asked the boy in KiSwahili: “Do you want to run?” He paused and looked at me, wondering if I was really asking him that. “Come,” I told him in KiSwahili. All of a sudden the boy sprints off ahead of me and leaves me in the dust, following the path around the ground. When I finished lap 6, I told the other boy to come too, and once again, he sprinted ahead of me. I’m jogging around the ground nice and slow, and these two 8 year old village boys are running full speed around and around the ground. It was hilarious! Each boy probably ran 3 times around. I sprinted with one for a while but couldn’t keep up. A bunch of boys from the other secondary school stopped to watch this white girl running and two village boys running laps.

I chuckled to myself as I walked back up to school.

2010 Golf Outing Winners

Change it Forward would like to thank all participants in our golf outing this year. Your support made it a wonderful event! We had 12 teams participate this year. The competition was fierce but friendly, which lead to a wonderful day. We also would like to thank the sponsors who made this event a real success!

Water News!

Magulilwa Area Secondary School will soon be having clean drinking water on site. A construction crew is in the process of putting the finishing touches on the system. The group is currently laying the pipes in trenches from the village to the school. I will post more pictures as they arrive!

Evaristo Sanga- Co-Chair

Evaristo Sanga grew up in Magulilwa village where this school is located, in South-Central Tanzania and attended Magulilwa Primary School. He was the only student in his class of 70 primary school students to be selected to attend secondary school, and traveled to a school in another town to continue his education. After graduating from high school in Tanzania, Evaristo was a Mathematics and Civics teacher at Pomerin Secondary School in Tanzania.

While teaching at Pomerin Evaristo met a global volunteer from St. Paul, MN who through friendship helped him to come to the United State to receive his education.

Evaristo received a Bachelor of Arts degree in MIS and Economics from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. He then earned a Master of Science degree in Software Engineering from St. Thomas University in St. Paul, Minnesota. Evaristo currently works as a Principal Application Developer at HealthPartners in Bloomington, Minnesota.

Evaristo was grateful for the rare opportunity to attend secondary school and had a dream of creating a secondary school in his village for many years. In 2004 he initiated the project to build a secondary school in Magulilwa in hopes that the children in the Magulilwa area will have a chance to continue their education and improve their lives.

Evaristo grew up from very poor family even by Tanzania’s villages standard. Yet through out his life many people have contributed to the success of his life. Evaristo can never quantify the help others have provided to him except has great appreciation for opportunities it has opened for him. It is through this lens that Evaristo is always looking for ways to help others. In many ways this school is a way for Evaristo to say thanks to those who helped him.
